Change the world

17/07/2017

Welcome back to the second semester – a notable time in the history of our University as we will officially become Nelson Mandela University this week.

The change from NMMU to Nelson Mandela University will be celebrated with the Mandela Magic concert for staff and students tomorrow (Tuesday) and an official launch for dignitaries on Thursday 20 July.

Staff/student concert

You are invited to the Mandela Magic concert at Missionvale Campus’ Indoor Centre from 3pm to 4.30pm tomorrow where the VC will address us. This event is viewed as official University business.  Attendance, however, is at the discretion of line managers and lecturers, especially given that commitments are already in place at the start of the new term. An official communique from HR to this effect has been shared. The VC’s speech will be live streamed.

Online attendance confirmation

Please RSVP using the online invitation so as assist with the logistics.

Cards, T-shirts and donations

Please wear Nelson Mandela T-shirts or related clothing and bring donations of stationery, bags, tinned or dried food, toiletries and clothing to the event as we launch Mobilising Mandela Magic or the #M3 campaign, a university-wide initiative as part of Mandela Day tomorrow (more information to follow) in support of our students and the Missionvale Community.

Please also bring your staff/student card as this event is for the University community only.

Transport

Limited transport is available, leaving from 1pm from the following locations:

  • North Campus (adjacent to soccer fields): 3 buses
  • South Campus (behind Building 123): 3 buses
  • Second Avenue Campus: 2 buses from back of campus

Buses will leave Missionvale at 5pm to return to the above campuses

Car pools

Staff who have the means to travel to Missionvale are encouraged to form car pools to give as many staff and students as possible the opportunity to attend this celebratory event.

Mandela Magic concert line-up

A full programme of entertainment by our own staff and students, supported by a live band will follow the Vice-Chancellor’s opening address. There will also be lucky draw attendance prizes.

Official event

The official launch for dignitaries only will also take place at Missionvale Campus from 10am on Thursday. The event will be live streamed. More details to follow.
