Change the world

The week that was …

The launch of our new name as Nelson Mandela University has surfaced much – exceptional media coverage, great University Shop sales, trending on social media, memes, robust debate and the realisation of the enormous responsibilities and expectations of us going forward.

Dear colleagues and students

Let’s keep the momentum of last week’s Mandela Day going with our #Mobilising Mandela Magic donation project (see donation points below).

As we move from the institutional look of NMMU to that of Nelson Mandela University, it is important that we are consistent in using the correct branding materials. This collective usage all forms part of building the new look and feel of the University.
Various changes have already taken place on our electronic platforms – websites, social media platforms, email and the like – with the change from NMMU to Nelson Mandela University.
The name is our logo
As was consistently shared at yesterday’s official launch of our new name, the name Nelson Mandela is universally recognised. This is why the name is our University’s new logo. niversally recognised. This is why the name is our University’s new logo.

Alumni share their thoughts on Nelson Mandela

The official launch of the University’s new name to that of Nelson Mandela University will take place tomorrow, Thursday 20 July.

After yesterday’s successful Mandela Magic Celebration for staff and students, let’s continue living our University’s values in support of Nelson Mandela Month.

As custodians of the iconic name of Nelson Mandela, the University is in the process of establishing a framework and guidelines towards the appropriate usage of the name on all collateral materials – from communication and marketing material, through to branded clothing and  institutional gifts, and to such items as letterheads and business cards.

In the spirit of Ubuntu and our values as we head to Missionvale Campus for the Mandela Magic Concert at 3pm tomorrow (Tuesday), we’re encouraging staff and students to:

Welcome back to the second semester – a notable time in the history of our University as we will officially become Nelson Mandela University this week.

To assist staff and students who have been given the go-ahead by their line managers and lecturers to attend the Mandela Magic concert on 18 July at Missionvale Campus, the University is arranging limited transport.

Let’s live our University’s values in support of Nelson Mandela Month – July – and our forthcoming name change.

We’re encouraging the entire University – staff and students - to get behind the Mobilising Mandela Magic (M3) campaign by contributing to our needy students and our Missionvale community.

Today marks the 10-day count down to the official launch of the University’s new name to that of Nelson Mandela University on 20 July.

A campaign in the lead-up to this high-profile event on Missionvale Campus where the new look of Nelson Mandela University will be revealed, also begins today.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz will take centre stage to engage with staff and students at the Mandela Magic Celebration at Missionvale Campus on 18 July.

It’s time to start replacing the old name with Nelson Mandela University.

Each faculty, department, school, division and individual is responsible for updating their own electronic documentation from NMMU to Nelson Mandela University.

It’s official! Our University will be re-launched as Nelson Mandela University on 20 July 2017.

A launch event befitting of the stature of former president Nelson Mandela will be held on Missionvale Campus, with leading provincial, national and international dignitaries from various stakeholder bodies, including Government ministries and departments, the Mandela Family and Foundation, in attendance.

Signage

The removal of the NMMU sign from the main building is the first physical indicator of our move towards becoming Nelson Mandela University. The old sign is now being refurbished to accommodate the new logo in preparation for the official launch.

What does the name Nelson Mandela mean to you?

This is the question being asked of staff and students towards as part of a deliberate process of collectively creating and building an identity and brand for our yet-to-be officially launched Nelson Mandela University, on the back of the name an icon and international statesman.

Staff and students are encouraged to create or seize opportunities to discuss our new future name - Nelson Mandela University - and what the identity of our new university can be.
There will be various practical implications to consider as we move from NMMU to Nelson Mandela University with the official launch later this year.
Later this year, we will officially become Nelson Mandela University when our new university name is formally launched – an exciting proposition particularly in respect to the opportunities associated with being named after one of the world’s greatest statesmen.
In the build up to the official launch of our new name – Nelson Mandela University - at a date still to be decided later this year, you are reminded of the opportunities available to have your say around the University’s new name and what it can mean for us.

As already shared, this university will soon be officially launched as Nelson Mandela University.

This new name and new identity will offer us many opportunities going forward, not least the benefits of leveraging on the iconic name of Nelson Mandela.

We would like to get a sense of what this all means for our University by engaging with staff and students through small group conversations in the lead-up to the official name change launch of Nelson Mandela University later this year.
Have your say
