Change the world

26/04/2017

Staff and students are encouraged to create or seize opportunities to discuss our new future name - Nelson Mandela University - and what the identity of our new university can be.

At the New Name Conversations for small group discussions that began yesterday, the following key questions are being asked:

  • What does the name Nelson Mandela mean to you/our University?
  • How do we live the legacy of Nelson Mandela?
  • How do you see your future at Nelson Mandela University, and what will our University be like in the future?

The answers to these questions and others, will help gauge the overriding themes towards forming a new identity in line with Madiba’s values and all that he treasured, such as social justice, the importance of education, the dignity and care of others and servant leadership.

Chat, reflect, debate, discuss, engage … but do talk about our new identity. Do so around the water cooler, during your tea break, at your society/academic meetings, during your lectures or anywhere where staff and students gather … or even intentionally create your own forum to talk about the university’s new future. We would appreciate any such feedback via SOAPBOX, an anonymous online platform for sharing, or via email (csl@nmmu.ac.za) so that we can facilitate all the voices from the shared conversations.

You are also still welcome to join the New Name Conversations as they are ongoing until 30 June for both staff and students. Simply email sugnee.vandervyver@nmmu.ac.za to get a list of time slots.
