An exhibition of Nelson Mandela’s diaries is housed at the university’s Archives & Exhibitions Centre on the Second Avenue Campus.

The collection focuses on Nelson Mandela’s personal diaries which he kept during his time in prison on Robben Island. The diaries contain information about letters which he received, films he watched, dates and duration of visits he received, the nature and duration of legal consultations, requests to the authorities and dreams which he had at night.

These diaries were confiscated by the authorities in 1971 and landed in the hands of police official, Donald Card who returned them to Mandela in 2004.

The diaries are currently on loan to the university.
